The Twelve Days of Lync’mas: Introduction

I am sure you are familiar with the old holiday tune, “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”  My favorite rendition as a child was by John Denver and the Muppets.  We had the record- yes, actual vinyl- and would play it over and over again while decorating the Christmas tree.  Growing up, I never really knew what was meant by The Twelve Days of Christmas.  Was it the twelve days prior to Christmas?  The twelve days following Christmas?  Some random number of twelve days in the month of December?  Who knew?  As a kid, the only counting I was doing in December was the number of days left until Christmas Day.

While brainstorming ideas for blog posts, I came up with the idea of borrowing the “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” but turning it into…. “The Twelve Days of Lync’mas!”  Original, huh?  No one ever accused me of being a terribly creative writer.  Embarking upon this blogging adventure, I thought it might be time that I know the origin of “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

From Wikipedia: The Twelve Days of Christmas are the festive days beginning Christmas Day. This period is also known as Christmastide and Twelvetide. The Twelfth Night of Christmas is always on the evening of 5 January, but the Twelfth Day can either precede or follow the Twelfth Night according to which Christian tradition is followed. Twelfth Night is followed by the Feast of the Epiphany on 6 January. In some traditions, the first day of Epiphany (6 January) and the twelfth day of Christmas overlap.

So there you have it, the Twelve Days of Christmas are the twelve days following Christmas Day.  That kind of deflated my blogging brainstorm, since I wanted to do the twelve days prior to Christmas Day.  Not to be deterred, I decided to break from tradition and as a Christmas present to you, “The Twelve Days of Lync’mas” will be a blog post per day for the twelve business days leading up to Christmas Day.  This series of posts will be a team effort with some of my colleagues – Keenan Crockett, Jason Sloan and Matt McGillen – joining the festivities and writing a post or two.
